Nobody Appreciates Strawberry Ice Cream

Anyone who knows me knows that ice cream is one of my addictions. I could literally eat it every day. Especially with some warm baked goods underneath it! My favorite ice creams are cookie dough, cookies and cream, butter pecan, and strawberry. So of course when I was checking out my National Food Day Calendar and saw that today was National Strawberry Ice Cream Day, it was a no brainer that I was choosing it for my weekly National food day post. July 1st is National Ice Cream Day, but on January 15th each year, one of my favs gets it's 15 seconds of fame.

Strawberry ice cream can be made in a couple different ways. The simplest way is by mixing in strawberry flavoring to vanilla ice cream, but that's the cheap way out (like at McDonald's, no shade). But if you want the real thing, you will put in a little more effort. It's made from blending strawberries and/or strawberry flavoring with eggs, cream, vanilla, and sugar. You can also add some light red or pink coloring to get the color like you want it.

To me, strawberry ice cream isn't appreciated. You hardly ever see people order it or buy it on its own. Usually, people buy it when they buy Neapolitan ice cream which comes with vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry.

There are also other variations of strawberry ice cream like strawberry cheesecake and strawberry ripple which is made with either fruit sauce, syrup, or strawberry granite. Strawberry granite can be easily made at home using hulled strawberries, sugar, lemon juice, and water.

Although there is no official deep history about strawberry ice cream, it has definitely been around since at least 1813, when it was documented as being served at the second inauguration of James Madison.

Strawberry ice cream is more than just ice cream to me. My family and I love eating ice cream and watching movies at the end of the night, so it also represents family and quality time. So in honor of National Strawberry Ice Cream Day, tonight I will be consuming an entire pint right by myself, and no one is going to make me feel bad about it!

Are there any foods that are sentimental to you? I'd love to hear about it in the comments!

  1. Do you know that as much as I love Strawberry Cheesecake Ice Cream, I never really appreciated Strawberry Ice Cream as much as I should have? I guess because the first time I tried Strawberry Ice Cream, it had bits of strawberry seeds in it and I wasn't expecting that lol. I think I am going to go back as an adult and really try to enjoy a nice cup of Strawberry Ice Cream. Thank you for highlighting these national food holidays! I am always looking forward to what's next on your calendar and what history comes behind the food item. Now if I'm going to grab up some instead of making my own, what do you suggest I get? Or where from?

    Great post, Lauren!

    1. You are not the only one. I don't know why it's not as popular as some other flavors! I would suggest buying some first that way if you make it and it don't turn out right, you won't give up on strawberry ice cream forever lol
